What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?
I love working outdoors, learning new things about wildlife every year, and pushing the industry forward in terms of holistic environmental thinking. I dislike how manic the deadlines can be and the long working hours during the spring and summer months.
What inspired you into this career?
I wanted to make a positive difference for my local environment and also make changes at a wider regional/national scale.
Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?
It was difficult getting into the industry without an MSc or volunteering. I was lucky and got a graduate position which enabled me to grow my career, but I know this is still a challenge for young people starting off in this career.
What education/training did you have?
BSc Natural History.
2 years of seasonal working doing fieldwork for protected species for an environmental consultancy.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?
Keep pushing yourself to learn more about certain wildlife groups, plants being a key group to learn. Also join any local groups you may have e.g. bat groups or bird ringing groups.
