Georgia Marchington
What employment sector do you work in?
Private Sector
How long have you had a green job for nature?
9 years
Please describe the work that you do.
I lead our resourcing and subbie teams responsible for the timely resourcing of our ecology projects and tenders, utilising either our in house ecology team or network of subconsultant ecologists.
My day to day primarily involves supporting my team, reacting to the queries that come through, quite a lot of problem solving and at present encompasses a lot of project management and development work as we work on improvements to our processes and resource planning software.
What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?
I enjoy the diversity of my role, with no one day being the same.
The problem solving nature of the work keeps my brain engaged and it’s rewarding when you’re able to solve a challenge for a colleague.
I try to get myself out on the occasional survey still too when I can to keep me sane.
What inspired you into this career?
My passion for the outdoors and conservation. I always knew I wanted to work outdoors (even though I don’t get outside so much in my present role). I took a year away from the industry after working as an ecologist for two years and worked in logistics for a travel company instead.
When I returned to the ecology industry I found a role perfect for me which essentially entailed working on logistics within ecology and utilising a lot of my skillset.
Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?
When I first started out in ecology 10 years ago the roles were very seasonal and the competition fierce it was hard being let go in the winter. I think the demand for ecologists is higher now and the seasonality a little less prominent.
What education/training did you have?
An undergrad degree in Physical Geography and a postgrad degree in Conservation Biology. Neither of which have a heavy focus on ecology, I’ve learnt a lot on the job and through volunteering earlier in my career.
In the last year I’ve gained an APM project management qualification.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Keep open to opportunities and try different things out, you never know where it will take you.
