Please describe the work that you do.

I work for a contractor on a large construction project in the Highlands. My main role is to manage environmental risk and monitor environmental performance for the project. I work alongside multi-disciplinary teams and interact with stakeholders.

What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?

No day is the same and I enjoy communicating with a range of professionals to achieve a single goal! I enjoy the pressure and responsibility that comes with my role and get great satisfaction when I can directly input into a part of the project to improve environment and sustainability!

I dislike the amount of midges that we get onsite!

What inspired you into this career? 

I have always had a passion for the natural environment and have developed my career across many disciplines and industries. I love the places some projects can take you – from National Parks, the top of mountains and idyllic Lochs! Sometimes your impact can feel small but recently the focus has really started to take environmental aspects of projects more seriously.

Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far? 

If you have the drive and conviction then you can really progress once you have found the correct discipline. In my early career I was perhaps under qualified for some of the roles I was expected to undertake which was stressful however those experiences shaped my career and thus allowed me to progress rapidly once I had more experience.

What education/training did you have?

I have a Bachelors (Hons) in Environmental Biology from Lancaster University and extensive in-work training. A CSCS card is mandatory for working on construction sites!

What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession? 

Be realistic and don’t run before you can walk. Have sustainable expectations about where you are when you enter the profession and where you want to go- I am 15 years into my career and still learning! Its enormously rewarding working within environmental management on construction projects!
