Please describe the work that you do.
I visit sites in towns and the countryside to understand and write reports about the landscape quality, value and sensitivity and their suitability or otherwise to accommodate proposed development. I’ve worked on sites ranging from central Oxford to the edge of the Peak District and been involved in proposed development ranging from research laboratories through residential development to film studios.
What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?
I’ve always been fascinated by the spectrum of character that can be experienced at all scales of the landscape and how these have been influenced by geology, vegetation and human activity through time. I enjoy working on the analysis of this in a wide range of contexts.
Sometimes there are tight deadlines but stress from these can usually be avoided with good time management.
What inspired you into this career?
I felt I had learnt all I could in the industry I previously worked in. So I was interested in a career where there would be so much to learn about the world around us.
Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?
In some firms people can be rude and unnecessary but one has to accept that as human nature and move on.
What education/training did you have?
I have a Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture and am working on chartership of the Landscape Institute.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?
Landscape character assessment is as much a part of the industry as landscape design.
