Please describe the work that you do.
I am an ecology director for a large consultancy firm, and at this stage in my career I line manage a number of staff and oversee and the review the work of others rather than actually doing survey work in the field. I have taken a specialism in solar and advise on how large renewable energy schemes can avoid impacts on wildlife and also how they can deliver net benefits for wildlife. I also now work part time undertaking survey work for the National Trust locally in my spare time.
What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?
The people I work with.
What inspired you into this career?
I was a keen bird watcher as a child and have worked for wildlife trusts and other organisations all my working life. The natural world is a big inspiration for me.
Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?
Challenges have been getting enough experience and also a lot of my early career jobs were short term and i had to move a lot.
What education/training did you have?
A degree in Biology but I have done a lot of training and involvement with CIEEM and now a fellow as well as a Chartered Ecologist.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?
Done give up
Do lots of voluntary work
Develop an expertise – plants and habitats would be my suggestion
Engage with CIEEM their training and mentor programme
Have a good look at graduate and apprentice schemes
