What employment sector do you work in?

Private Sector

How long have you had a green job for nature?

4 months

Please describe the work that you do.

I work for a regenerative forestry consultancy where our mission is to inspire change and bring hope. I assist foresters on projects across the country as well as support the delivery of our TreeStory Learn courses. I am currently involved in a range of native woodland creation projects and long-term forest management plans. I work half in the office, half out on the hills! Projects require lots of days out on site and community engagement as well as desk-based mapping and document write-ups.

What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?

I love how much I’m outside – sitting on a hill in the Cairngorms to have my lunch is rather surreal! I also love my team, as an intern with no previous forestry experience they have all been amazing in taking me under their wing and showing me the ropes. Most of all, I love what we’re doing: connecting the ancient Caledonian pinewood, diversifying woodlands, protecting habitats, expanding riparian corridors, it’s not only super cool work but also incredibly fulfilling. It’s been really awesome to meet and work with likeminded people who want to do what’s best for the landscape and to be part of making that happen.

What inspired you into this career?

I always wanted a job where I could work with and in the environment whilst doing good for it. After leaving University I had no idea how to get there, all I knew is that I didn’t want to do research! Through scrolling on LinkedIn I found the world of rewilding and nature restoration and it was like a lightbulb moment – THIS is what I want to do, not just conserve the environment but actively restore it! And it was through following various organisations and people on LinkedIn that I came across the company I currently work for. I had never even considered forestry, but what TreeStory stand for really resonated with me, so I thought I may as well give it a shot – and I’m so glad I did.

Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?

My main uncertainty was deciding what was best to do after University, further education or trying to get a job. And I still don’t have an answer! I had a place on a masters course, and I think I would’ve really enjoyed it, but my hesitation was that I wasn’t 100% sure that the subject was exactly what I wanted to do. I have really appreciated being able to experience the field through work, and I must admit it is a lot less stressful, and find my passions that way. However, I may still do further education in the future when I feel more clear on where I want to go next.

What education/training did you have?

Just my Zoology degree.

What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?

If you’re passionate, enthusiastic, and keen to learn – that is all you need! Do not worry about knowing enough or having enough experience. Put yourself out there, even if you don’t think it will work, always take the shot!
