Seren Peregrine
What employment sector do you work in?
Private Sector
How long have you had a green job for nature?
6 months
Please describe the work that you do.
I am investigating Peatland restoration opportunities on land owned by a water company.
What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?
I like the variety! My days are split fairly evenly between home, the office and out and about on site. I love working with a variety of partnerships to share knowledge and best practice advice.
What inspired you into this career?
I was driven to do something about the dual climate and biodiversity crises. I also love being in nature and feel passionate about protecting it!
Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?
Sometimes I find that working in a big organisation can be slow and quite process heavy. However it also means that I have lots of amazing and knowledgeable colleagues to seek advice and support from!
What education/training did you have?
I have A levels in maths, physics and chemistry, although I wouldn’t necessarily recommend them for the career I am in now! I have a MEng in Civil Engineering (I specialised in water) and a MSc in Conversation and Biodiversity. I spent a year working as a a water engineer for a large consultancy, where I worked on Natural Flood Management projects.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?
Don’t be afraid to pursue a job in this sector even if you haven’t followed the classic conservation/ ecology route. I think my background actually helped set me apart from others and made me unique. If you know which roles you are interested in, have a look at the job profile/ description to see where your skills overlap and where you might need to upskill! Volunteering is handy for this.
