Tamara Scarr
What employment sector do you work in?
Private Sector
How long have you had a green job for nature?
3 years
Please describe the work that you do.
One of my main responsibilities is being the point of contact for the Project Managers for any financial queries in the business. I work with multiple teams to help solve these queries or support general day-to-day tasks. I also work primarily within the credit control department, helping to reduce company debt by communicating with clients about invoice payments.
What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?
I love working with the ecologists in the business and learning about the projects they are working on. It’s inspiring to see the real-world impact our work has on the environment, and it makes even the numbers-focused side of my role feel meaningful. I enjoy collaborating with different departments across the company to support these environmental goals. I’m very lucky to say that I don’t currently dislike any part of my job!
What inspired you into this career?
I have always enjoyed mathematics, but I’ve also always had a strong interest in the environment. I first started at the company as a project coordinator, where I loved being involved with projects that made a real difference for nature. Over time, I became particularly interested in the finances behind these projects, which led me to transition into the role of Finance Administrator. Now I focus on the finances of both projects and the company, helping ensure our work for the environment can continue sustainably.
Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?
Since I don’t have a background in finance, I’ve been working towards my AAT qualification while working full-time. Balancing study and work has definitely been challenging, but it has greatly benefited my knowledge and skills in my job.
What education/training did you have?
I didn’t have any formal education in finance before starting. However, I’ve always had a passion for mathematics and finance, and my company has supported me in pursuing this. Since starting, I have completed my Level 2 AAT qualification and am now beginning Level 3.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions helping with understanding the business, its environmental mission, and the impact it has can make even a numbers-focused role feel meaningful. Strong attention to detail is important, so if you enjoy working with data and solving problems, you’ll thrive.
