Please describe the work that you do.
As Marine Consents and Environment Manager, I oversee a diverse portfolio of projects, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and promoting sustainable practices within the marine sector. My responsibilities include project management, stakeholder engagement, and the implementation of conservation initiatives and ensuring permits and conditions are adhered to on marine projects.
What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?
I value the variety and dynamic nature of my work, which encourages continuous professional growth. Collaboration within my team is really emphasised, contributing to a supportive and productive environment, which allows us all to learn more from others.
What inspired you into this career?
A passion for nature and conservation led me to this field; however, nobody in my family had worked in this sector, or even gone to university. An early placement with the North Wales Wildlife Trust broadened my understanding of career opportunities in environmental management and allowed me to gain varied experiences to support my future choices.
Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?
Securing my initial role was competitive, but the process enhanced my skills and resilience. I advocate for increased opportunities and greater diversity and inclusion within the sector to ensure more opportunities are provided across the board and we have a broader array of ideas.
What education/training did you have?
I hold an undergraduate degree in Biology and a Master of Research in Marine Mammal Genetics, complemented by ongoing professional development courses.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?
Gain broad experience through volunteering and varied fieldwork. Networking with professionals in the sector will expand your knowledge and reveal further opportunities – not only that but you will have good friends for life!
