Please describe the work that you do.

It’s a real variety, but primarily, I organise and manage my organisation’s social media platforms, work with colleagues to capture our project work, produce copy for the website to keep our information up to date, and plan social media campaigns to share our work and key messages. When not out and about capturing content, I also look for opportunities to collaborate with other organisations and help develop communications strategies to try and grow support for our work in the catchment.

What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?

I like how varied my role is – it can look different from week to week – and how much I work with everyone in the organisation. I feel like I’ve gained a real understanding of the variety of ongoing conservation work in my catchment and all the benefits it provides.

No dislikes, so far!

What inspired you into this career? 

I’ve always had a passion for nature and the outdoors and knew I wanted to work in a sector where I could be close to nature, so getting this role where I can communicate and share all the amazing things happening to restore rivers in our catchment was a great opportunity, one that I sort of stumbled upon, but it’s been amazing!

Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far? 

Time is the biggest barrier for anyone I think, but after that, for me, it’s been learning to drive. Accessing all areas of the catchment is tricky via public transport and necessitates driving, and it’s a beneficial skill to have for any career.

What education/training did you have?

I completed an undergraduate BSc in Environmental Science and Outdoor Education, which gave me a comprehensive understanding of all things nature and environment and a passion for the outdoor world!

What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession? 

Take every opportunity you can find – network with people, because knowing people is really beneficial in this sector, and it can open up opportunities from volunteering to paid roles, mentorship or even just helpful information. So really dive in and immerse yourself – but don’t forget to take a break too, because you can’t help anyone or work at your best when burnt out.
