Industry Sector
How long have you had a green job for nature?
3 years
Please describe the work that you do.
As an Environmental Manager, my role typically involves overseeing and implementing environmental management strategies to minimise the impact of mining operations on the environment.
Ensuring that the company adheres to environmental regulations and standards, including local, national, and international laws.
Developing and promoting sustainability initiatives within the company, such as waste reduction, resource conservation, and energy efficiency programs.
What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?
Working with non-governmental organisation’s (NGOs) to promote environmental stewardship, engage in community outreach, and address concerns related to mining activities.
As it is a mining company, I do feel like I contradict my values somewhat as I want to protect and help nature and I believe there is only so much I can do in this sector.
What inspired you into this career?
From a young age, I have always found solace and joy in the great outdoors. Whether it was hiking through forests, exploring beaches, or marvelling at landscapes, nature has always been a source of inspiration for me. However, my travels around the world exposed me to both the unmatched beauty of our planet and the stark realities of environmental degradation and harmful practices.
Witnessing the impact of human activity on delicate ecosystems ignited a sense of responsibility within me. I became acutely aware of the urgent need to protect our natural resources and promote sustainable practices. This realization motivated me to pursue an education in environmental science, equipping myself with the knowledge and skills necessary to make a positive impact.
Now, as an Environmental Manager, I am dedicated to using my expertise to advocate for responsible mining practices and collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure that we protect and preserve the environment for future generations. My goal is to contribute to a more sustainable world, where the beauty of nature can be enjoyed by all without compromising its integrity.
Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?
As of now, I have not faced significant challenges in progressing my career, especially after my recent promotion from an EHS Officer to the UK’s Environmental Manager. This advancement reflects my commitment and passion for environmental management. However, I recognise that as I continue to grow and align my career with my personal values, I may consider moving away from the mining industry. Transitioning to a different sector focused on sustainability could present new challenges, such as adapting to different regulatory environments, understanding new industry practices, or navigating the complexities of various stakeholders. Yet, I view these potential challenges as opportunities for growth and furthering my mission to protect the environment.
