Private Sector

9 Years
Salary Range
£30,001 – £40,000
Please describe the work that you do.
I design that landscape for new developments across the UK, mainly within the residential sector. working closely with engineers and ecologists I design landscapes that are multi-functional, provides spaces for people while also creating habitats for wildlife.
What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?
The favourite things about my job is taking an idea in a quick sketch all the way to a fully detailed proposal and then eventually being able to visit the finished project. Walking around a place you’ve designed is special and creating places for others is very rewarding.
What inspired you into this career?
I’ve been interested in architecture and design since first thinking about a career at high school. When discovering Landscape Architecture, it ticked a lot of boxes for me. Rather than creating a building, I get to work at a much larger scale, creating places with a range of characters and uses.
Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?
Not yet, no. I think working in a role that is engaging keeps me interested and eager to learn new things. I think it’s important to continue to learn each day, the way places are designed can always be improved through the knowledge of new products or materials and the way people use spaces continues to evolve and change.
What education/training did you have?
After a break from education I studied Landscape Architecture at Leeds Beckett University for three years. I then worked in practice for one year as a year out student, which was very valuable for my continued learning. Upon completion I returned to Leeds Beckett University to complete a one year masters degree in Landscape Architecture before starting my career as a Graduate Landscape Architect.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?
If this is something that you’re interested in or passionate about, then take the leap. Working in a role that keeps you interested if very rewarding and is one of the main reasons I made the career change.
