What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?

What I enjoy most about my job is the balance of fieldwork, technical problem-solving, and environmental stewardship. I love being outdoors, working closely with nature, and knowing that the work I do, whether it’s protecting wildlife, improving habitats, or guiding projects to be more sustainable, makes a real, positive impact. It’s rewarding to see tangible outcomes and to contribute to healthier ecosystems and responsible development.

What inspired you into this career?

I was inspired to pursue a career in ecological management through a strong interest in how ecosystems function and how they can be protected and restored. Seeing the pressures on habitats and species made me want to work in a role where I could actively contribute to practical, on-the-ground solutions. The idea of managing habitats, supporting biodiversity, and helping projects progress in a more environmentally responsible way motivated me to choose a path where I could make a real difference in the health and resilience of our natural environments.

Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?

Not at this point.

What education/training did you have?

Various in the industry and beyond.

What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?

My advice for someone entering the profession is to gain as much hands-on experience as possible. Fieldwork is a key part of ecological management, so volunteering with local wildlife groups, conservation organisations, or consultancies can really help build practical skills. Keep learning, ecology is always evolving, and continuing professional development is essential. Develop confidence with tools like GIS and get familiar with key legislation, as these are central to the job.
