What employment sector do you work in?

Public Sector

How long have you had a green job for nature?

6 years

Please describe the work that you do.

I manage 3 nature reserves within Test Valley Borough Council. This includes arranging for necessary works to be done – whether that is contractor, internal teams or volunteer groups. Engaging with stakeholders, parish councils, volunteer groups, and community groups. Managing each reserves budget. Organising & delivering practical work on site. Engaging with the public (face to face/social media/emails/phone calls). Organising dog owner engagement initiatives on the reserves.

What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?

I enjoy knowing that I am part of a larger movement – a group of people who are looking after our green spaces, providing areas where nature can thrive alongside public use.
My main dislike – I find it such a shame how we, as a society, are becoming more and more disengaged with nature, and what to expect when out in nature.

What inspired you into this career?

I am a career changer – I developed a love for volunteering and meeting new people within volunteer placements during my first career. This provided me with an insight of how much I loved working outside, in nature with like minded people. So I suppose you could say the positivity and good nature of volunteering inspired me!

Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?

The job market out there for nature and environmental roles is incredibly competitive – I recently successfully progressed my career, but that wasn’t without many failed applications (without even making it to the interview stage). There are many people exploring ways to gain entry into this sector and to move within it, vs limited job opportunities and at times low pay expectations.

What education/training did you have?

I started within the Veterinary sector, gaining an NVQ Level 3 qualification. Since changing may career, I have successfully passed a LANTRA Level 4 Countryside Ranger qualification. I also have some teaching qualifications, and a Forest School Level 2 qualification.

What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?

Be ready for some setbacks applying for jobs – as I have mentioned the job market is very competitive. To give yourself the best chance and to get your name out there volunteer with as many suitable organisations as you can (be feasible). This shows that you are keen, serious, and under your own direction are learning and educating yourself.
Use LinkedIn too – this is a great way to connect to like minded people, get yourself noticed, and helps the job hunting!
Most importantly – stay positive!
