Please describe the work that you do.

I am based full time at one of London Wildlife Trust’s nature reserves – Walthamstow Wetlands. Alongside a team, I deliver guided walks for public as well as visiting groups, wildlife – related adult learning workshops to raise awareness about the vital need for UK nature recovery and inspire participants to take actions for nature in their own spaces, as well as coordinate the Visitor Engagement volunteering opportunities and deliver practical conservation volunteering sessions.

What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?

I love how varied my role is, as often it’s a balance between outdoor and office tasks. No two days are the same when you work at a nature reserve!

What inspired you into this career? 

I really wanted to work outdoors, protecting nature since early age and I really loved sharing interesting wildlife facts with family and friends when I was younger, which is luckily what I now do as a job!

Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far? 

The lack of driving licence has been a barrier a few times during job applications.

What education/training did you have?

BSc Ecology and Environment
I volunteered sporadically for 3 years before landing my full-time job, with several organisations, including London Wildlife Trust and took part in a variety of volunteering roles such as ecology surveying, practical conservation and data inputting.

What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession? 

I would recommend trying a few conservation volunteering roles first to see what you might enjoy doing most, and looking for paid traineeship opportunities which might give you as much useful knowledge in a shorter amount of time as a university degree would.
