Introduction to Apprenticeships
Why Choose an Apprenticeship?
With an apprenticeship, you don’t just learn in a classroom – you learn by doing. You’ll work alongside experienced professionals, contribute to real projects and discover what it’s like to work in the environmental sector.
Benefits of an apprenticeship:
- Get paid while you learn
- Gain hands-on experience
- Work towards recognised qualifications
- Build skills that employers are looking for
- Start a career that makes a positive difference for nature and people
- Open to school leavers and people of different ages and backgrounds
Is an Apprenticeship Right for You?
You might enjoy an apprenticeship if you:
- Prefer practical, hands-on learning
- Want to start gaining work experience straight away
- Enjoy being outdoors or solving real-world challenges
- Want to earn money while developing your skills
How do Apprenticeships Work?
As an apprentice, you’ll have a real job with an employer while also studying with a training provider. As your skills grow, you’ll take on more responsibility and build confidence in your role. At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll complete an assessment to show what you’ve learned.
Training, Support and Pay
Apprentices are paid employees. Your training is usually funded, so you can focus on learning without paying tuition fees. You’ll receive support from both your employer and your training provider throughout your apprenticeship journey.
Apprenticeship or University?
Both apprenticeships and university can lead to careers in ecology, conservation and environmental management. The biggest difference is how you learn.
- Apprenticeships focus on practical experience and paid work.
- University focuses more on academic study.
The best route depends on your learning style, interests and career goals.
See Where an Apprenticeship Could Take You
There isn’t just one type of green job. Apprenticeships can help you develop skills for a wide range of careers that support nature and the environment.
Meet Lydia Winthorpe – Green Estates Ranger, Somerset Council
Lydia completed a Level 4 Countryside Ranger Apprenticeship and now manages wildlife sites across Somerset, helping to conserve habitats including sand dunes, woodlands, grasslands and reedbeds. She also carries out wildlife surveys and works with local communities and volunteers. Lydia’s story shows how apprenticeships can lead directly to practical, outdoor conservation careers.
Meet Alex Baker – Head of Strategic Resourcing, Woodland Trust
Not all green careers involve working outdoors. Alex helps the Woodland Trust attract, recruit and support the people needed to protect and restore woodlands. Alex has completed degree apprenticeships during their career and is a strong advocate for apprenticeships as a way to build skills and gain valuable work experience.
Meet Lucy Brogan – Marketing Assistant, CIEEM
Lucy recently completed a Level 4 Marketing Executive Apprenticeship and now helps promote careers in the environmental sector through Green Jobs for Nature and CIEEM. Her story shows that skills such as marketing, communications and digital content are also vital to supporting nature and conservation organisations.
