Lucy Brogan
What employment sector do you work in?
NGO
How long have you had a green job for nature?
2 Years
Please describe the work that you do.
I work at CIEEM (Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management), the professional body that supports ecologists and environmental managers in the UK, Ireland, and beyond. My role is split between day-to-day marketing for CIEEM and supporting the Green Jobs for Nature project, which is all about promoting careers in the environmental sector and helping bring new talent into the field.
Day-to-day, I manage a mix of digital content and communications. This includes:
– Social media: planning, scheduling, and posting across our channels like LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok and Instagram.
– Email newsletters: writing and sending regular e-updates and campaign emails to keep members informed and engaged.
– Website updates: keeping content fresh and relevant on both the CIEEM and Green Jobs for Nature sites.
– Reporting: tracking engagement and performance across channels to see what’s working and help shape future content.
– Campaign support: working on wider projects and comms activity to support our goals and reach new audiences.
What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?
I basically live on social media, so getting to be creative with it at work is right up my street. I love coming up with post ideas, writing captions, and messing around with designs or trends to see what clicks. It’s fun seeing what kind of content actually gets people to stop scrolling and engage and it’s always changing, which keeps things interesting. For me, it’s the perfect mix of creativity and communication.
What inspired you into this career?
I’ve always been drawn to creative work and loved how social media and digital content can really tell a story, connect with people, and make an impact. At the same time, I’ve always cared about nature and the environment, so being able to combine those two things just made sense. Working in marketing and comms in the environmental sector means I get to be creative while also supporting something that actually matters, helping people discover careers that protect the planet. That’s what really pulled me into this career and keeps me motivated.
Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?
Yes, like anyone, I’ve faced challenges along the way, ’ve had to learn new things on the fly and juggle different tasks, which can be tricky sometimes. But honestly, those challenges have helped me get better and figure out what works. I’ve learned to stay open, ask for help when I need it, and just keep pushing forward.
What education/training did you have?
I completed my GCSEs and A-levels, and I’ve just finished a Level 4 Marketing Executive Apprenticeship with Oxford College. The apprenticeship gave me hands-on experience and solid marketing skills that I use every day in my role.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?
I’d say be curious and open to learning as much as you can, things move fast in this field, especially with social media and digital marketing always changing. Don’t be afraid to try new ideas, ask questions, and ask for feedback.
