Please describe the work that you do.

Ecological consultancy, carrying out protected species and habitat surveys, and providing advice to clients.  

What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes? 

Likes – The variety of work, being able to go to different places and see a variety of habitats and species. The mix of outdoor and office work. I work with a good and supportive team. 

Dislikes – Some of the work is more development-focused, which I enjoy less. The amount of traveling and staying away from home can be tiring. 

What inspired you into this career? 

I wasn’t inspired into the career more just fell into it through opportunities that came my way but now I stay in it because of my passion for wildlife and that I am able to continue learning. 

Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?

Adjusting to full-time work, being a slave to a timesheet and office life was a struggle and sent me into mental health issues for the first time. Once I got control of this, progressing in my career has come easily. 

What education/training did you have? 

BSc degree in Zoo Biology

1 year placement/traineeship at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust 

What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession? 

Do lots of volunteering, give everything a go, show that you are keen to learn.
