What employment sector do you work in?

Private Sector

How long have you had a green job for nature?

3 years

Salary Range – Full Time Equivalent

> £50,000

Please describe the work that you do.

I currently oversee the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Digital Systems and Data teams within a large ecological consultancy. This broadly involves supporting field ecologists, and support staff with technology which enables them to capture, store and process data in an efficient way.

What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?

What I love most about the job is the problem-solving aspect to it. Finding a slick technical solution to a problem that can be re-used and become part of everyday workflows is very rewarding. I also love that my job allows me to interact with almost everybody in the company.

What inspired you into this career?

My background is in cartography (or map making) which subsequently evolved into the world of GIS. Geography and IT were always my strongest subjects at school, so a career that combined both was an obvious choice for me. The beauty of GIS is that it is a truly industry-agnostic software.

Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?

The main challenge has always been keeping pace with technological advances. When I look at what software and systems can do now compared to 20 years ago it is truly mind-blowing, and that shows no signs of slowing down.

What education/training did you have?

An undergraduate degree in Geography and Cartography and countless on-the-job software specific training courses.

What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?

Keep and open-mind to new developments, develop a thick skin and commit to continuous learning
