Please describe the work that you do.
We work across 3 reserves, 1 private 300 acre site and two smaller public reserves. Undertake habitat management, pond maintenace, reptile and amphibian surveys, GCN surveys, stakeholder interactions, community days and work with volunteers.
What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?
Seeing wildlife and working out in nature. I don’t have any dislikes at present but would like to be more involved with habitat, project or ecology aspect.
What inspired you into this career?
I have built ponds with my older brother since I was small, we loved to see amphibians and reptiles and have always been interested in birds through my grandfather and mammals like hedgehogs and foxes. It’s something I wish I had gone into earlier.
Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?
My lack of specific qualifications and experience is an issue.
What education/training did you have?
I volunteered with the BTO, Butterfly Conservation, PTES & the wildlife trusts for 13 years. Mainly survey work. Have been gardening, specifically organic based and wildlife friendly for over 6 years.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?
TKeep focused and volunteer whilst learning. It’s a passion and a belief that wildlife should prosper. Never give up even when you face rejection.
