Please describe the work that you do.

I’m an intern at the Environment Agency working in Regulated Industries in E&B (Environment and Business) working on climate change adaptation. I came in through the Summer Diversity Internship Programme. I have been creating case study footage to support communications and training on the changes to Environment Permitting Regulations (EPR) from a Regulated Industries perspective.

What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?

I enjoy the work that I do on climate change, and I believe that the work we do at the EA (Environment Agency) makes a real difference. I have enjoyed working with a diverse range of teams and being exposed to the breadth of work that we cover at the EA including going on various site visits. We have a positive and friendly culture. I also enjoy the opportunity to work flexibly.

What inspired you into this career?

My interests have always been in the environment, sustainability, and climate change so I knew at an early stage that I would like to pursue a career in the environment. During my time at university, I was aware of the EA and the areas of work that I could potentially go into so I thought the internship programme would be a good opportunity to start my career.

Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?

So far, I have not experienced any major challenges.

What education/training did you have?

I graduated in BSc Geography before my internship began which helped as I had relevant knowledge on environmental issues. I also completed the Carbon Literacy Training when I joined the EA which was useful to understand what the EA is doing to lower their carbon footprint and how we are integrating sustainability into our business.

What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?

The advice I would give would be to have an open mind and be willing to try new things or expose yourself to different teams and types of work so that you can understand what you enjoy and where your interests lie.
