What employment sector do you work in?

NGO Sector

How long have you had a green job for nature?

3.5 years

Salary Range

£25,001 – £30,000

Please describe the work that you do.

Day to day marketing activities such as social media, email campaigns, recruiting members online and at events. Designing collateral e.g. leaflets, signs, banners as well as ensuring others work is on brand. Working with staff to help them create their own communications. Working with our face to face membership recruiters. I also go out on nature reserves to generate content and keep up to date with staff.

What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?

There’s a lot of work to be done and a lot of scope to explore various creative options on how to achieve my goals. Not having vast budgets is a downside but it means I have to think creatively to get around that.

Working with likeminded people who care about the same things, e.g. local wildlife, is such a benefit. We’re all here because we know that nature needs our help and that creates an instant bond between us all.

What inspired you into this career?

An awareness of the climate breakdown, wanting to do something about it and spend my limited time on this planet trying to make it a better place, isn’t that why we all do it?

Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?

Working in a medium sized conservation organisation there is limited scope for me to become more senior in my current field of expertise, it seems like the only answer is to find a job elsewhere, even if I don’t want to leave and even if the organisation would rather keep me – currently that seems like the only option to progress whilst still doing marketing!

What education/training did you have?

Bachelor in Arts in Graphic Design 2.1.

What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?

Apply anyway! Yes it takes time and is soul crushing, I get it. However, if you tick some but not all of the boxes but are passionate about the cause and have something to bring then use a covering letter / adapt your CV to show this.

Too often organisations put too many things on Job Descriptions. I am not convinced that the plethora of skills on those lists are often attainable, so don’t be put off by it – you have to advocate for yourself and shout from the rooftops about your passion
