Please describe the work that you do.
I work for a climate solutions charity that boosts climate innovation in the UK and Global South. Our charity’s support brings clean energy to villages and refugee camps and fixes up cold and draughty homes. It makes schools more sustainable and helps communities protect and restore the nature around them.
As Operations and People Manager, I have overall responsibility for organisational systems and processes, manage the recruitment process and lead on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). I ensure that the team have the tools and resources they need to work effectively.
What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?
I love how varied my role is and that I’m learning every day.
I am fortunate to speak to people with different lived experiences and I use this to inform the procedures we implement. I am passionate about Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and my dream would be to see this embedded in our work and not treated as a separate work strand.
What inspired you into this career?
It wasn’t planned. I’ve had a varied career, working in banking, legal and the TV and Film Industry. I started in the environment sector as an Executive Assistant, grew within my role and here we are.
Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?
No
What education/training did you have?
I had no specific training for my role, I’ve learned on the job. I am always keen to upskill and I’ve mapped out a bespoke learning and development plan for this year.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?
Understand what it is the organisation does. Be inquisitive and when possible shadow work colleagues, it’s invaluable.
Read up on relevant industry resources so you know what is going on and how this will affect the organisation and the work you do. Use this as an opportunity to develop transferrable skills.
