Emma Thomson
What employment sector do you work in?
Private Sector
How long have you had a green job for nature?
4 years
Salary Range
£30,001 – £40,000
Please describe the work that you do.
I work for AtkinsRéalis as an Ecology Project Coordinator (PC). My role is incredibly varied, ranging from Project Management, to coordinating surveys and the H&S aspects of it all, setting up new subconsultants, and going out and about on surveys.
What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?
I love the variety that the job brings. One day, I can be sitting at my desk writing a fee proposal, and the next I am off out surveying for bats!
I dislike when something crops up that is out of my control, and delays a project from progressing. Sometimes, there are delays in communication due to other commitments, but it’s something that you do learn to deal with!
What inspired you into this career?
Having worked elsewhere in AtkinsRéalis for many years, I felt it time for a change so when the PC role came up in Ecology, I jumped at the chance. Initially, it was very much desk-based but I identified the potential to develop along the Ecology route and broached the subject with my Line Manager. I am now a competent bat surveyor, and have recently added Great Crested Newts to my repertoire.
Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far?
I have not experienced any challenges, and I’ve been promoted twice since beginning in this role.
What education/training did you have?
I have a Project Management qualification (APM), and undertake regular in-house training to aid my progression along this route. Additionally, a great deal of my survey training has been “on the job”, so not only am I learning the theory of it, I am getting in a lot of practice.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession?
Come in with an open mind, and try out different elements. You will soon find your stride, and find that it is very rewarding. Do not be afraid to speak up and ask for additional training, and if you see someone doing something that you think you’d enjoy, then do not hesitate to ask them about it!
Additionally, check out local authority websites, country parks etc for volunteering opportunities! You can learn a lot from these, plus it’ll get your name out there.
