Please describe the work that you do.

I am responsible for deer management on Glenfalloch Estate, Scotland. This involves coordinating deer counts with neighbours and deer management groups, Herbivore Impact Assessments, setting cull targets and delivering the set cull targets.

What do you most like about your job? Any dislikes?

Being outdoors and seeing the changes to the land throughout the seasons. Seeing nature every day.

What inspired you into this career? 

My father was a Deer Stalker and it’s all I ever wanted to do as a career.

Have you faced any challenges in progressing your career so far? 

It took a while for me to get a full-time position at the start even though my father was in the industry. Perseverance paid off.

What education/training did you have?

I have standard grades and SCOTVEC courses from high school and NC (National Certificate) and HNC (Higher National Certificate) in Wildlife and Gamekeeping from Thurso Highland College.

What advice would you give to someone coming into the profession? 

Get as much practical experience as possible and complete one of the Gamekeeping courses at college. Don’t give up when it takes time to find a position.
